Ruthless People

1986 | Jim Abrahams, David Zucker, Jerry Zucker |

This film I was not credited as Production Designer as I was not yet in the Art Director’s Guild, but I was the designer. For some reason I was drawn to the just-popular Memphis look. I wanted Danny de Vito’s house to hurt! When he first sits down in the living room chair and groans… it still makes me giggle.

This was a great set to work on. The Zucker’s brothers kept us laughing all day and Bette Midler was hysterical.
I still feel guilty that i took a wonderful new design vision and made it ridiculously. Shame on me. However, the set played a vital role in the visual comedy. At first the cinematographer balked at the white walls and vivid colors, but ultimately he made a great success of it.
